You’ve finally made it to Hakuba! Everything has been falling into place – the trip made it out of the group chat, your boss approved your leave, the snow is dumping, even the conversion rate is making you feel like a millionaire! And then during day one, the only thing falling is you! Whether it was dusting off the cobwebs of your ski skills, a tricky chairlift or you couldn’t resist going off piste… there’s always a reason to end up taking a tumble on day one – it’s only an issue when you’re struggling to pull up for day two!
If you’ve woken up with a sore and swollen joint – be it ankle, knee, wrist, shoulder or even finger – we’ll step you through the first steps to get you back on the snow in no time.
- Get the swelling down – Compression is one of the most effective ways of reducing swelling, whip out those flight compression socks or use a tight bandage. Once you’re bandaged up, elevate the body part above your heart for greatest effect.
- Get your pain down – If you’re in pain, you’re more likely to injure yourself further so if walking hurts, sit down! If snowboarding or skiing hurts, head to the physio so they can figure out exactly what’s going on.
- Get full range of movement – once you’ve settled your pain and swelling, it’s time to get things moving, not too fast and not too slow, there’s a sweet spot to these things. As a rule of thumb movement that causes 1-2/10 pain could be okay, anything more means you need to pump the brakes.
It can be hard to know what’s a season ending injury and what’s a hiccup. The best way to know is to get a professional opinion. Book an appointment and in an hour you’ll have all the info you need and a plan to return to the snow (if not full clearance)! You could be back on the slopes before lunch! As well as thorough assessment and treatment, our team also does taping and bracing and can direct you for imaging if they think it’s required.
